Highlighting and Contouring

Highlighting and contouring are really simple ways to enhance your features.  The idea can be intimidating to some, but it is simply the use of dark and light areas to shade and contour your face in a flattering way. Highlighting and contouring shouldn't be considered  techniques only used on "heavy" or full make-up days. The idea is to use a shade darker than your skin tone to contour and use a shade lighter to highlight.

First, you want to identify your face shape. You can reference this diagram to help guide you.

There are a zillion tutorials on pinterest, youtube, etc. that can help you if you need more information.

The 10 Commandments of Contouring and Highlighting by Allure Magazine gives really great tips if you are a beginner.

 I use these products in my every day routine.  The contouring or shading helps define my cheek bones and jawline, and the highlighting helps to create a dewy, fresh-faced effect.

{Added Bonus : These products in particular are great to use during the colder months when your skin is losing that summer glow and can start to take a grayish, dull tone.}

1. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream - I love this product. It is a non-greasy, SPF 35 "beauty balm" that I wear alone on "no make-up" days or to even out my skin and create a primed flawless base. I put this on over my moisturizer. I think this has better, but still light, coverage than a typical tinted moisturizer.  Smashbox describes this product as a "multitasking tinted cream formula with SPF 35 moisturizes, primes, perfects, controls oil, and protects for flawless skin on set and beyond."

2. Sonia Kashuk Primer Base Perfecting Brightening Primer -  On those particularly gray and dull complexion days, I will mix a tiny of amount of this in with my moisturizer.

3.  Nars The Multiple - This product is fantastic. I use "Shimmering Apricot" on my cheekbones. I apply this after the BB cream and under eye concealer. It is a cream to powder stick that can be used on cheeks, lips, eyes, body, you name it! It gives a warm glow. This should be in everybody's make-up bag. It wins the Best All Around Award.

4. Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Highlighter Stick -  My go-to highlighter. I apply this at the very top edge of my cheekbone, a dab in the bow of my lip, and to highlight my eyebrows. This product does what it's name suggest and makes your complexion look more luminous. I use shade "sparkling sands 45."

5. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch - I've been addicted to this product for years. I use it over my Stila concealer in the under eye area to lighten and brighten.  It's really an instant brightener for your face. This product has reached cult following. If you don't believe me, read some of the more than 3000! reviews on Sephora that give it 41/2 out of 5 stars. This is another one that everyone should use.

6. Nars The NARSSist Cheek Kit - A great compact all-in-one kit that has a perfect bronzer for countering, a blush, and highlighter powder. This is great to have in your purse to refresh your make-up. If you are not sure what products are best for you, this is a great item to start with!

To contour I use my Nars bronzer in Laguna. It is in the cheek  kit mentioned above.

Are you already highlighting and contouring? What are some of your favorites?
